Grammar Schools In the late forties and fifties, there were six grades of Grammar, two of Junior High and four of High School. In Baton Rouge, when we finished grammar school, those of us who went to Grammar schools south of Choctaw Road were destined to go to Baton Rouge Junior High School and then to Baton Rouge (Senior) High School.
Many of us were born and raised in the same neighborhood. We played together, rode bikes together, had fights together, had bouts of puppy love together and did just about anything you can think of that kids are wont to do. In those days there was no bussing of students for racial harmony or for any other reason; so we went to the same Grammar school together. They had names like Bernard Terrace, Dufrocq, Fairfields, Goodwood, Highland, Nicholson, Sacred Heart, Saint Joseph's Academy, Southdowns and Wyndotte. To get to school, we would walk or ride bicycles. It should be no surprise that we developed a friendship and a bond that we would treasure our entire lives.
